How to Care for a Hardwood Cutting Board

A hardwood cutting board is not only a practical tool in the kitchen but also a beautiful addition to your culinary workspace. With proper care and maintenance, a hardwood cutting board can last for years, providing a sturdy and reliable surface for all your chopping and slicing needs. In this blog post, we will guide you through essential tips and best practices for caring for your hardwood cutting board, ensuring its longevity, cleanliness, and overall performance.

Seasoning Your Cutting Board:
Before using your new hardwood cutting board, it's crucial to season it with a food-grade mineral oil or a specially formulated cutting board oil. Apply a generous amount of oil to the entire surface of the board, including the sides and edges. Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for several hours or overnight, then wipe off any excess. Seasoning helps to seal the wood, preventing moisture absorption and maintaining the integrity of the board.

Here at A&B Creations, before being sold all of our boards are submerged in mineral oil for a minimum of 24 hours before being waxed with our food grade wood butter (minerail oil + beeswax). This is done to ensure maximum protection and to save you the effort.

Regular Cleaning:
After each use, clean your hardwood cutting board with warm water and a mild dish soap. Avoid soaking the board or submerging it in water, as this can cause warping or splitting. Use a sponge or soft cloth to gently scrub the surface, removing any food particles or stains. Rinse the board thoroughly with warm water and pat it dry with a clean towel. NEVER PUT A HARDWOOD CUTTING BOARD IN A DISHWASHER.

Sanitizing:
To ensure proper sanitation, it's important to periodically sanitize your hardwood cutting board. You can use a diluted bleach solution or a mixture of water and vinegar for this purpose. Apply the solution to the surface of the board, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. This process helps kill bacteria and prevents cross-contamination.

Avoid Excessive Moisture:
Hardwood cutting boards are susceptible to damage from excessive moisture. To prolong the life of your board, avoid leaving it in standing water or exposing it to prolonged periods of high humidity. After cleaning, always dry the board thoroughly before storing it.

Preventing Odors:
Certain foods, such as garlic or onions, can leave lingering odors on your cutting board. To combat this, sprinkle some coarse salt or baking soda on the board's surface and scrub it gently with a lemon half. The salt or baking soda acts as a natural deodorizer, while the lemon helps neutralize odors.

Refinishing:
Over time, your hardwood cutting board may develop scratches or stains. To restore its appearance, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper, following the wood grain. After sanding, clean the board and apply a fresh coat of mineral oil or food-safe wood butter. This refinishing process helps remove surface imperfections and rejuvenates the wood.

Storage:
Store your hardwood cutting board in a dry and well-ventilated area. Avoid placing it near direct heat sources, such as stovetops or ovens, as this can cause warping or cracking. Consider using a cutting board rack or stand to keep it upright and prevent any unnecessary pressure on the board.

Conclusion:
Caring for your hardwood cutting board is essential for maintaining its beauty, durability, and functionality. By following these tips for seasoning, cleaning, sanitizing, and protecting your board, you can ensure it remains a reliable and hygienic tool in your kitchen for years to come. With proper care and maintenance, your hardwood cutting board will not only serve you well but also enhance your cooking experience and add a touch of natural elegance to your culinary space.
